You’re hungry for something more… something that would tickle your taste buds and feed your soul. But deep down you feel embarrassed, ashamed and maybe even envious of others, because as much as you wish you could, you are afraid you just don’t have what it takes to be able to eat normally.

I know how it feels. For over 20 years, I lived in a self-imposed prison of food rules and restrictions. I was afraid to eat. I was afraid of food, especially foods like pumpkin pie or pizza, because I bought into the toxic nutritional belief that food on my plate (especially carbs or fat on my plate) equaled fat on my body. And fat on my body meant that I was unattractive, unhealthy and even unlovable.

I tried so hard to be “in control” of food and my appetite, and exhausted myself both physically and emotionally trying maintain the illusion of control by trying to achieve the perfect body.  But all along I had a shameful little secret. When the holiday party was over, I’d often rifle my way through the leftovers, devouring all of the decadent treats that I considered off limits and that I had been resisting or denying myself all day or evening. I lived with a chronic obsession around food, fear of gaining weight, and a relentless rollercoaster of rules and restrictions, until I couldn’t take it anymore and would plummet into a full-blown binge.

The next morning I’d awake feeling bloated, guilty and ashamed and I’d swear to “be good.” I’d skip breakfast or lunch, and set up new food rules for the day. Or I’d drag myself to the gym and punish myself for the crime of eating.

And yet, inevitably, I’d be right back to square one the next time I was faced with food – which during the holiday season was a LOT! 

I was distracted by the constant obsession around food and my body. I certainly wasn’t present to the moment, or to the people in my life. And to be honest it worked pretty well – the truth is I wanted to be distracted – I didn’t WANT to deal with the difficult emotions that lay under the surface or the things it’s hard to be with this time of year – money stress, tension with family members, feelings of loneliness and comparison, and reminders that my life wasn’t living up to many of the dreams I had for myself. It was easier to look in the mirror and criticize my body, or to occupy my mind with food rules and calorie counting.

What I didn’t realize back then was that the very act of restricting and depriving was actually keeping me locked in this cycle. And it’s the same trap that so many other women stay stuck in because they don’t have the information or the support they need to find the escape hatch.

It’s not your fault if you’ve been trying to do everything “right” when it comes to diet and exercise, and yet you are still struggling with unwanted weight or eating habits.

You see, the REAL reason most people struggle, especially during the holiday season, has NOTHING to do with the food. And the way through this is different than you’d expect:

  • It’s NOT about forbidding or depriving yourself of the foods you truly enjoy
  • It’s NOT about eating less (and less, and less and less) and exercising more to force your body into a certain shape
